# Celtic: McAvennie reacts to Ayew links

**[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mcavennie-shares-verdict-on-ayew-replacing-edouard-at-celtic-after-terms-agreed/) pundit and former Celtic man Frank McAvennie has been reacting to the Hoops’ interest in Andre Ayew.**

### The Lowdown: Celtic’s Ayew interest

According to Turkish outlet [Fotomac](https://www.fotomac.com.tr/), cited by the [Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/transfer-news-live-celtic-rangers-24286701) (11/06; 21:49), Celtic are battling Fenerbahce for the 31-year-old’s services.

This comes after [Swansea City confirmed](https://www.swanseacity.com/news/swansea-city-confirm-retained-list) the [Ghana international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andre-ayew/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/45403) will leave the club when his deal expires at the end of the month.

That’ll make Ayew a free agent, and[wages are thought to be a key factor](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/transfer-news-live-celtic-rangers-24286701) when it comes to the forward deciding on his next move.

### The Latest: McAvennie reacts

McAvennie was asked by [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mcavennie-shares-verdict-on-ayew-replacing-edouard-at-celtic-after-terms-agreed/) about the club’s interest in Ayew, with a forward seemingly required after [Odsonne Edouard told friends he will be leaving Parkhead this summer](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-edouard-tells-friends-he-is-quitting-celtic-to-join-leicester-city-after-personal-terms-agreed/).

This is what the 61-year-old had to say in reply, making reference to [Ayew’s Swansea wage worth £83,000-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/sky-bet-championship/swansea-city/).

> “He didn’t do too well at West Ham.
>
> “He’s done better at Swansea when he plays upfront as part of a two. He did alright in the playoffs.
>
> “He scored a great goal in the first leg. He’s getting on a bit though. Is he going to come in on those wages?
>
> “I’m not sure Celtic will sanction that if he’s demanding a high wage.
>
> “It’s a name, he’s going to be free. I’m not really for or against it. If he comes, great.
>
> “If he doesn’t, fine. We’ll get someone else.”

### The Verdict: Is a deal realistic?

With [Leigh Griffiths’ future also up in the air](https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/leigh-griffiths-celtic-contract-latest-20577484), new manager Ange Postecoglou may want more than one forward this summer, so offering Ayew crazy wages could be a costly call, as McAvennie suggests.

Celtic’s highest earner last season, excluding loanees, was [Scott Brown on £23,000-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/scottish-premiership/celtic/), so, on that basis, you’d expect Ayew would want a figure in the region of his previous pay packet in Wales.

The Hoops, therefore, may have to make the striker, who has scored [150 goals for club and country](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andre-ayew/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/45403) in his career, their highest earner.

It could make sense to end their interest in the African and look elsewhere, but only time will tell what Celtic and Postecoglou have planned.
