Celtic could receive £17m if they win the Scottish Premiership title and qualify for the Champions League, according to finance expert Dr Dan Plumley.

The Lowdown: Celtic in pole position for league title

The Hoops secured their biggest win of the season so far on Sunday afternoon, picking up a priceless 2-1 victory away to their Glasgow arch-rivals.

It was a result which saw Ange Postecoglou's side go six points ahead of their biggest rivals, putting them in pole position to wrestle back their domestic crown in May.

Celtic winning the league would be a huge deal in itself, but it could also have a huge financial bearing ahead of next season.

The Latest: Expert hails £17m windfall

Speaking to Football Insider, Dr Plumley claimed that a "huge" £17m could be coming the club's way if they can obtain a place in the Champions League group stage in 2022/23. He stated:

"It’s huge, of course. The starting fees for the Europa League group stages, you’re guaranteed £3.4m. If you get to the Champions League group stages, you get at least £14m, maybe even £17m.

"In terms of being transformative, that’s a huge revenue increase. It looks like they are the ones who will finish on top of the pile. That’s why this title was even more important than other years, arguably. The jump from Europa to Champions League is so big."

The Verdict: Huge financial boost

Money is such a massive part of the modern game, so this is huge news from a Celtic perspective as they look to go from strength to strength under Postecoglou.

It would generate funds for new signings in the summer transfer window, ensuring that the Hoops have the best chance possible of competing in the Champions League rather than going out in meek fashion.

There is still plenty of work to do in the title race first of all, but Dr Plumley's comments should act as an added incentive for everyone associated with the club.
