Celtic: Journalist critical of Liel Abada vs Real Madrid -Celtic News

Celtic winger Liel Abada was the one Hoops star who looked ‘out of his depth’ against Real Madrid, according to journalist Adam Doyle

The lowdown

Celtic lost 3-0 to the reigning kings of Europe in their Champions League Group F opener at Parkhead.

Vinicius Junior broke the deadlock around ten minutes into the second half, with Luka Modric swiftly adding a second on the hour and Eden Hazard wrapping up a lovely team move for three.

Abada came into the game in red-hot form, having followed-up a hat-trick against Dundee United with a double against Rangers.

But he only lasted 45 minutes in this one, with Ange Postecoglou sending on Daizen Maeda in his place at half time.

The latest

Doyle, a football writer and editor, issued his verdict at half time, praising the performance levels of the team as a whole and Reo Hatate in particular.

But he picked out Abada as a player who struggled to cope with the test.

He wrote: “Fantastic first 45 from Celtic. Reo Hatate is some player. Only really Abada who has looked out of his depth so far. Angeball in full flow.”

In a subsequent tweet, he added: “No surprise Abada was hooked there.”

The verdict

Abada had a couple of opportunities when the score was still 0-0, and he may now be ruing his failure to take them.

The Independent’s Miguel Delaney felt that ‘Celtic could have [had] two’ after the Israeli winger got in behind twice, but criticised his ‘poor’ and ‘rushed’ execution.

Ultimately, the statistics justify Doyle’s verdict on Abada.

His SofaScore rating of 6.4/10 was the third-lowest among Celtic’s outfielders, beating only Greg Taylor (6.3) and Cameron Carter-Vickers (6.2).

Abada won only one of the five duels he contested and was only able to complete five passes, with neither of his crosses finding their intended target.

His impact off-the-ball was limited too, as he failed to regain possession on any occasion and was dribbled past twice.
