Celtic: Noel Whelan heaps praise on Postecoglou’s ‘Man City’ plan -Celtic News

Ex-BBC pundit Noel Whelan has hailed Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou for his ‘Man City’ plan after looking to the future and allowing duo Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic to both leave the club this summer.

The Lowdown: Pair have contracts terminated

The midfield pair both had one year remaining on their current contracts with the Hoops, but it appears that they have been terminated 12 months early after the Glasgow giants confirmed just last week that the two players would be departing the Scottish Premiership champions after almost ten years of service.

The former Leeds striker compared the exit of Bitton and Rogic to those of Man City legends like David Silva and Sergio Aguero as an example of some of the biggest clubs in the world having to let their top players go if they want to continue competing at the highest level.

The Latest: Whelan heaps praise on Postecoglou

Whelan suggested that the Australian boss will now be busy searching the transfer market to find suitable replacements following his decision to axe the Celtic duo. He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury:

“It won’t have been an easy decision for Postecoglou.

“We’re talking about experienced players. Players who had been at the club long before him.

“It’s never nice, but there’s always a turnaround in football. You can’t ever rest on your laurels and stick with what you’ve got. You have to keep the wheels turning and keep bringing in these fresher faces.

“They’ve been great servants, but the time always comes. It’s about the next season and the seasons after that.

“It’s just like we’ve seen with the likes of Man City.

“They had the pain of letting the likes of Aguero, David Silva, and now Fernandinho go – but it’s never too early to look to the future.

“It’s clever from Postecoglou and his team, even if it was a hard decision.”

The Verdict: Going out on a high

Rogic was the first of the pair to arrive at Celtic Park from Central Coast Mariners back in 2013, before Bitton joined the club in the summer of the same year from FC Ashdod.

Between them, they have won a staggering 34 trophies during their respective time with the Bhoys and have been fantastic long-term servants who will be hugely missed by everyone associated with the club.

It was a fitting way for them to go out on a high after securing the Scottish Premiership title for the final time last week, with the club now preparing to compete in the Champions League group stage next season, no doubt with younger and fresher replacements.

In other news… Celtic are reportedly ‘desperate’ to complete the permanent signing of one first-team player.
