Celtic's rumoured interest in signing Manchester City defensive midfielder Claudio Gomes this summer is 'wide of the mark', according to a significant update from the reliable Mark Hendry.

The Lowdown: Gomes linked with Hoops move

The Hoops are seemingly still looking to make midfield reinforcements ahead of the start of the new Scottish Premiership season, especially with Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton leaving earlier in the summer.

One player who has been linked with a switch to Glasgow is Gomes, who is at City currently but spent last season on loan at Barnsley, making 32 appearances in total.

The 21-year-old could again be loaned out this summer with no route into Pep Guardiola's first team, and with his current deal only having one year left on it, a permanent exit is also possible.

The Latest: New update laughs off rumour

According to Football Scotland's Hendry, however, the rumours circulating in recent days are believed to be 'wide of the mark' and 'not one in the offing'.

Celtic are thought to be 'content' with their current summer transfer business, although there are 'one or two irons in the fire', with Ange Postecoglou potentially eyeing up more signings.

The Verdict: Midfield addition still key

With Gomes seemingly not a transfer target for Celtic, it is important that they now look at alternative options, given their slight lack of depth in central midfield.

Admittedly, the players they have are still strong compared to almost every other Scottish Premiership team, but with Champions League football returning to Parkhead in 2022/23, more quality is key.

Aaron Mooy is a strong midfield acquisition and looks an ideal replacement for Rogic but one more certainly wouldn't go amiss - a defensive-minded player possessing youth and energy, like Gomes, who was once tipped by Guardiola to be the heir to Fernandinho at City.
