Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has called for further defensive reinforcements at Parkhead after the capture of Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The lowdown: Carter-Vickers done
This comes in the wake of the Hoops confirming the permanent signing of the American defender from Tottenham Hotspur recently following a successful loan spell in Glasgow last season.
Despite the rock-solid duo and the now apparent prolonged future of Christopher Jullien at the club, one invested onlooker believes that Ange Postecoglou should still be on the lookout for further options…
The latest: McAvennie calls for more
The 62-year-old said: “I am very happy with that (Carter-Vickers). I was always hopeful and it always looked on the cards. I would still like another one. What is going on with Jullien, I don’t know. He doesn’t seem to be in the manager’s plans.
“I think we need another centre-half, we need someone to compete with Cameron Carter-Vickers. That would really improve the team. You need competition for places. That is always a good thing. So, for me, that’s what I would do next because that’s important in my opinion.”
The verdict: Spot on
The permanent signing of Carter-Vickers is a sensational piece of early transfer business, but with the added pressure of Champions League football on the horizon, it’s imperative that Postecoglou has adequate strength in depth at his disposal going into the new season.
Although Jullien may now be willing to stay and battle for a place among the starters after an injury-hit 18 months, the Frenchman cannot be relied upon, having placed so little football in recent times.
Are Celtic well-covered at centre-back?
Beyond the 29-year-old, there is only the inexperienced trio of Liam Scales, Dane Murray and Stephen Welsh available in the Lennoxtown ranks as natural centre-back cover, so another signing in that area is imperative ahead of the new campaign.
With reported target Ko Ikatura seemingly set to join Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, the Celtic hierarchy may now turn to another centre-back who’s been linked with the Glasgow giants, namely Manchester City youngster Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
