# Celtic: Odsonne Edouard had been the subject of interest from Monaco this summer

**French Ligue 1 club Monaco had attempted to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard this summer before suddenly backing out of the deal, according to reports from France.**

The print edition of [L’Equipe](https://lequipe.fr/) reported \[[via Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/club-multiplied-contacts-seduce-celtic-player-walked-away-transfer/)\] that Monaco had “multiplied contacts” in an attempt to lure the 21-year-old to the club, adding that the outline of a potential contract for the player had been drafted.

However, according to [L’Equipe](https://lequipe.fr/) \[[via Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/club-multiplied-contacts-seduce-celtic-player-walked-away-transfer/)\], Monaco then withdrew their interest in Edouard and the deal broke down.

While L’Equipe did not specify a reason for the collapse of the deal, [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/club-multiplied-contacts-seduce-celtic-player-walked-away-transfer/) suggested that either Celtic had flatly refused to entertain Monaco’s interest or their asking price was too high for the Ligue 1 side.

Edouard has been a prolific goalscorer since [first coming to Celtic on loan from Paris Saint-Germain](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41106133) two years ago.

A return of [11 goals in 29 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344152) in his first season in Glasgow persuaded the Hoops to [make him their all-time record signing at £9m](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44482698) last year and he rewarded their faith with [22 goals in 52 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344152) in 2018/19, making him the club’s [top scorer for the season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/371/plus/1?reldata=%262018).

He has continued that form into the current campaign, his [goal against Rangers last Sunday](https://www.skysports.com/football/rangers-vs-celtic/411242) his [sixth of the season in 11 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdaten/spieler/344152).

Celtic have had plenty of goals from elsewhere in the team recently, with [Ryan Christie on eight for the season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/371/plus/1?reldata=%262019) and [James Forrest scoring six](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/371/plus/1?reldata=%262019).

However, [neither of those players are in the same centre-forward role as Edouard](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/kadernachposition/verein/371), while Christie’s goals have dried up recently, with [none in his last five games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-christie/leistungsdaten/spieler/188077) after scoring [eight in the previous eight appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-christie/leistungsdaten/spieler/188077).

Of Celtic’s other strikers, Leigh Griffiths has scored [three goals in eight matches so far this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/371/plus/1?reldata=%262019), having netted [six times in 2o games last term](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leigh-griffiths/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/45611) before stepping away from football in order to battle depression, as reported by the [Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/leigh-griffiths-lifts-lid-mental-17267335).

Vakoun Issouf Bayo claimed two goals in the recent win over Hearts, but these were later awarded as own goals by the SPFL (as per [The Scottish Sun](https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/4649902/bayo-celtic-goal-spfl-hearts-own-goals/)), meaning that the Ivorian is [still awaiting his first Celtic goal](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/vakoun-issouf-bayo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/375877).

Jonathan Afolabi, who [joined from Southampton](https://www.celticfc.net/news/16676) last week, has [never even played competitively at senior level](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonathan-afolabi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/444209), never mind scored.

Had Edouard ended up going to Monaco in the summer, Griffiths’ scoring record suggests that he could have adequately filled the void, but the pressure on him to do so may well have been immense given his mental health troubles.

Neither Bayo nor Afolabi seem ready to seriously challenge for Edouard’s place any time soon, and with the former PSG striker picking up where he left off last season in terms of goalscoring, Celtic can be glad that Monaco reneged on their plans to sign him.
