# Celtic: Ryan now Postecoglou’s top target

**Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan is now Ange Postecoglou’s top Celtic target, according to [Scott Burns of The Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/conor-hazard-could-leave-celtic-24441773).**

### The Lowdown: Hoops make Ryan promise

It took just [three days for Ryan to be linked with a move to the club](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11787/12331006/mat-ryan-celtic-considering-move-for-brighton-goalkeeper) following [Postecoglou’s switch to Celtic Park was confirmed](https://www.celticfc.com/news/2021/june/Celtic-appoint-Ange-Postecoglou-as-new-football-manager/).

The pair worked together during Postecoglou’s four-year stint as Australia boss, with the 55-year-old making [Ryan his number one at the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Asia Cup](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11787/12331006/mat-ryan-celtic-considering-move-for-brighton-goalkeeper).

[Reports](https://www.footballinsider247.com/arsenal-celtic-ryan-talks-price/) last month claimed that Celtic were putting a contract package together for Ryan and were ready to offer him the number one shirt at Parkhead.

### The Latest: Burns claim

Burns, who [broke the news regarding Celtic’s move for Sheffield Wednesday defender Osaze Urhoghide](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/osaze-urhoghide-set-celtic-transfer-24436984) on Thursday [hours before it was announced](https://twitter.com/CelticFC/status/1410636234465107971), shared a [story on Thursday evening](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/conor-hazard-could-leave-celtic-24441773).

He claimed that Postecoglou is likely to bring in a new shot-stopper with Ryan a top target.

### The Verdict: Sign

If Postecoglou now sees Ryan as a top target, Celtic should do everything they can to grant his wish ahead of the new season.

He’ll know just what the 29-year-old would bring to Parkhead and could end up solving the club’s goalkeeping dilemma.

[Vasilis Barkas](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/vasilios-barkas/leistungsdaten/spieler/248658/plus/0?saison=2020), [Scott Bain](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/scott-bain/leistungsdaten/spieler/85627/plus/0?saison=2020) and [Conor Hazard](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/conor-hazard/leistungsdaten/spieler/322770/plus/0?saison=2020) were all handed opportunities last season, with Neil Lennon unsure on who to stick with throughout the previous campaign.

Ryan, who has [58 international caps and 124 Premier League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mathew-ryan/leistungsdaten/spieler/128969) under his belt could be the ideal addition and a deal looks financially doable.

A price between [£3-5m has been touted](https://www.footballinsider247.com/arsenal-celtic-ryan-talks-price/), but Ryan may have to take a slight hit on his [£35,000-a-week wage](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/brighton-hove-albion/mathew-ryan-23839/) if he wants to move to Scotland, with [Callum McGregor the club’s top earner on £20,000-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/scottish-premiership/celtic/).
