# Celtic: Peter Lawwell to take up new role in January

**Former [Celtic](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/celtic-news/) CEO Peter Lawwell will return to Parkhead as non-executive chairman at the beginning of January, according to [Sky Sports journalist](https://twitter.com/AnthonyRJoseph) Anthony Joseph.**

### The Lowdown: Lawwell left Celtic in 2021

The 63-year-old took up his role of CEO at Parkhead back in 2003 and remained the position until 2021, overseeing numerous different managers and trophy successes.

Lawwell [stepped down](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55852763) last year, with Dominic McKay [briefly replacing him](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwj29dGjo937AhWgTEEAHcsdDs0QFnoECDwQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scotsman.com%2Fsport%2Ffootball%2Fceltic%2Fdominic-mckay-lands-new-role-just-weeks-after-leaving-celtic-3428038&usg=AOvVaw3MAwnPAIgsltrrlJ6n237E) in a role [now occupied by](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12760216/peter-lawwell-former-celtic-chief-executive-returns-as-chairman) Michael Nicholson, and it was unknown if he would return to the [Premiership](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/scottish-premiership-news/) champions in a high-profile capacity again, having represented them at times since.

The answer to that question has since been confirmed, following a significant update from a reliable source.

### The Latest: Celtic return confirmed

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/AnthonyRJoseph/status/1598658034967928832?s=20&t=i2sPGTgCpnRRhzxvG3_Dow), Joseph confirmed that Lawwell would step into a new behind-the-scenes role at Celtic from January 1st, taking up the position of non-executive chairman.

### The Verdict: Good decision by Celtic?

Like any CEO, Lawwell always had his [admirers and detractors](https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/arid-40216568.html#:~:text=divisive%20figure%20among%20the%20Hoops%20support) down the years but the positives outweigh the negatives when it comes to this news.

He knows Celtic inside out as a club, and his vast experience and passion can help the Hoops to continue being well-run during this successful period under Ange Postecoglou.

Lawwell clearly won’t have the power that he once did, but replacing the retiring Ian Bankier in the role could bring a freshness to proceedings, with his [Celtic-supporting background](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12760216/peter-lawwell-former-celtic-chief-executive-returns-as-chairman#:~:text=lifelong%20Celtic%20supporter) certainly likely to be a help as he would have the club’s best interests at heart.
