# Celtic: These fans had mixed opinions on whether they’d take Ki Sung-yueng back at Parkhead

**Former Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-yueng becomes a free agent as of February 1st and [@20MinuteTims](https://twitter.com/20MinuteTims/status/1223264570439016450) on Twitter posed the question about a possible return to Parkhead.**

As tweeted by Sky Sports Premier League ([@SkySportsPL](https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1223260874976235520)) on Friday afternoon, the [South Korea international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sung-yong-ki/nationalmannschaft/spieler/81796/verein_id/3589) has reached an agreement with Newcastle to have his contract terminated at St James’ Park and is free to find a new club as of Saturday.

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/celtic-plot-move-to-sign-newcastle-star-out-of-contract-in-2020/) reported in late December that Celtic manager Neil Lennon had identified the 31-year-old as a possible transfer target for the January window, with the Hoops boss claimed to be a “huge admirer of the Korean”.

Ki played under Lennon during his previous stint at Parkhead, with [77](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sung-yong-ki/leistungsdatentrainer/spieler/81796/plus/0/verein/371/trainer_id/6266) of his [87 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sung-yong-ki/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/81796) for the club coming under the 48-year-old’s management, and the midfielder [scored 11 goals and provided 15 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sung-yong-ki/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/81796) for Celtic between 2010 and 2012.

The Korean had fallen out of favour at Newcastle under Steve Bruce, making just four appearances this season and not getting a Premier League start since August (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sung-yong-ki/leistungsdaten/spieler/81796)). After [@20MinuteTims](https://twitter.com/20MinuteTims/status/1223264570439016450) broached the topic of a possible Parkhead return for Ki, these Celtic fans provided a mixed bag of reactions:

> Surely he would do a job for at least 6 months?

> Not a must have but maybe a “nice to have”. Would enable a well earned rest for Callum occasionally

> Even if only to play home games against the bottom 6 to give Brown or McGregor a rest….all day long.

> No. Not better than McGregor or Ntcham. Not physical enough to displace Brown. Waste of time and money.
