# Celtic tipped to edge Newcastle to illustrious free agent in January

**Despite the spanking they were handed by Barcelona in the Champions League many weeks ago now, the Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern have been enjoying their first campaign under Brendan Rodgers so far.**

After somehow stagnating under Ronny Deila, the Hoops look to have found their fire once more and their barnstorming start to the season has left little to moan about for the Bhoys propping up the bar.

In fact, the New Year sales could see this season get even better for them.

According to the latest [Sky Bet](https://www.skybet.com/football/transfer-specials/event/19982506) odds, the SPFL champions remain FAVOURITES to land Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard, who looks as if he will be leaving MLS side La Galaxy.

Having worked with Rodgers at Liverpool, the ex-Three Lions skipper is [tipped](https://www.skybet.com/football/transfer-specials/event/19982506) to join the Glasgow giants in January as his time stateside draws to a close.

Celtic are just [13/8](https://www.skybet.com/football/transfer-specials/event/19982506) to bring in the 36-year-old, who despite his age, would certainly represent a major coup for Scottish football.

Newcastle are next in line at [6/1](https://www.skybet.com/football/transfer-specials/event/19982506), though he and Rafa Benitez don’t share the best of histories despite their trophy-laden spell together.
