West Brom are set to offer former Burnley and Stoke City left-back Erik Pieters a contract at the club, according to a reliable journalist's claim

The Lowdown: Pieters training with Baggies

The Baggies could do with more reinforcements after a disappointing end to the transfer window, with Steve Bruce's squad arguably looking a little light and the manager exasperated over two failed deadline day moves.

A recent report has claimed that Pieters is training with West Brom, with the left-back not currently attached to any club after leaving Burnley in the summer.

His time at Turf Moor may well be remembered for an administrative error in February 2021 which saw him named in the Clarets' starting line-up for an FA Cup clash against Bournemouth despite him being suspended.

Discernible progress seems to have been made regarding a move for the 34-year-old on top of the likely arrival of another free agent Tom Rogic, following a fresh update.

The Latest: Left-back set to seal move

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter on Sunday morning, Pieters is set to become a West Brom player after being offered a contract by the Championship club.

Alongside a link to a Patreon post titled 'West Brom to bag Pieters', the reporter simply tweeted: "Bruce to bag new defender."

The Verdict: Shrewd addition by Bruce

Pieters may now be 34 years of age but he could be an astute addition on a free transfer by West Brom, boasting the enviable experience of 225 Premier League appearances.

The 18-cap Netherlands international can provide competition for Conor Townsend at left-back, while his versatility means that he is also capable of filling in as a centre-back when required.

The fact that Pieters would come in on a free transfer also makes it less of a risk for Albion from a financial point of view, so it's hard to find any reason why this wouldn't be a good move by Bruce and co.
