Sheffield United are currently preparing for life in the Premier League after a superb promotion season last year saw Chris Wilder’s man seal second spot.
The Blades surprised many in the game with their performance levels and consistency, and now Wilder and his players will be fully focussed on ensuring they don’t become a one season wonder in the top flight.
To do that though and make sure they avoid relegation, the Blades must move in the transfer market and sign some big name players who can make a difference to the performance levels at Bramall Lane.
One such name who has been linked with a move to United in the last few days is West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez, who can reportedly leave the club for £5m after the Baggies failed to win promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt.
This has opened the door for a club like United to swoop, and we here in the Tavern think it’s a match made in heaven.
Rodriguez smashed in 22 goals last season for Albion as they lost out to Aston Villa in the play-offs, and his form hasn’t gone unnoticed around the rest of the League.
With the Blades having an ageing and unproven strike force at the top level, the signing of someone like Rodriguez makes perfect sense, given his Premier League experience and age.
The former Southampton man was once touted as the next big thing in English football, but a few bad injuries have disrupted his career. However, he is now fully back fit and firing it would seem, and what makes a move to Bramall Lane attractive for Rodriguez would be the almost guarantee of first team football.
United play with two strikers, but they also like to deploy a number 10, something Rodriguez is more than comfortable with.
The former England man is too good to be loitering in the Championship, and he could prove to be a superb capture for the Blades if they can pull it off.
