With the Dean Smith era in full swing at Villa Park, the fans have been turning their attention to the January transfer window and looking at any potential transfer targets. The Mirror has popped up with one that hasn’t gone down with the fans at all, as apparently, Smith is eyeing up a Villa park return for Barry Bannan.

Barry Bannan is currently spending his time at Sheffield Wednesday. The Scottish midfielder has been in good form since he joined The Owls and it’s not a surprise to see that there is interest surrounding him. However, given how his last spell at Villa Park went, the Villains are keen to see Dean Smith dodge this bullet and avoiding splashing out a sizable £8 million fee on the 28-year-old would be a smart move.
There are plenty of players out there who would massively improve the Villa squad for a smaller fee than the £8 million being quoted around Bannan and in positions that would be far more beneficial to the club. One of the main issues that the fans have is with their goalkeeper and full-backs and it’s hard to see Smith shoehorning Bannan into either of those roles, so the fans will be hoping that the club has plenty of funds available if they’re prepared to splash out on the Wednesday man.
You can read The Villains’ verdict on the Bannan rumours here:
Buying him back for £8m would represent tragically bad business for us & his upturn in form might be down to him not spending so much time on the piss as he did when he was with Villa.

Never sure a player returning to a former club ever really works. If I was Dean Smith I think I'd forget the midfield and forwards and concentrate on defence and between the sticks. That's where our problems are. However, in Smith we trust. #AVFC

Unless he now plays as a CB, GK or LB i think another midfielder is least of our priorities tbh

How to blow 8 million…

8 million for a player we sold for 1.9 million absolutely stupid money imo. There’s a lot better players out there for that kind of money

I never liked the bloke. Didn't think he was very good. Why bring crap in to replace crap?

The fans are not prepared to see Bannan back at the club and would love to see who else Smith is looking at splashing out on.
