Aston Villa fans went into their clash with Nottingham Forest last night not knowing what to expect. The reverse fixture of this clash at Villa Park saw the spoils shared in a ten-goal thriller, and when it was 1-1 after seven minutes at The City Ground anything could have happened. However, John McGinn proved to be the difference with a well-taken brace.

Whilst the fans didn’t know what to expect last night, the same can also be said of when John McGinn joined the club. When the Scottish midfielder snubbed Celtic to join Aston Villa from Hibernians last summer no one knew what was going to come from the 24-year-old midfielder. However, in his short time in the Championship he’s been a revelation, and his two goals last night have seen him given the recognition he deserves.
The midfielder really isn’t in the side for his goals, though. What McGinn brings to Dean Smith’s midfield is energy and a battler. So often the Scotsman’s heatmap is lauded by Aston Villa’s official Twitter account for the way he puts himself about and that’s to be admired. Last night was no different, as well as the two goals he also won more duels than any other player and was rightly and deservedly named as the man of the match for the clash.

What an unbelievable player, if we had McGinn, Mings and Grealish fit and available for the entire season we would have won the league by now #avfc

What a player. After our Jack, is there a better player in the league? Because if there is, I must be blind.

The Villains find themselves more and more impressed by McGinn every week and would love to see him battling it out at Villa Park in the Premier League in the next few years.
