Aston Villa lining up January move for Yoann Barbet

It is no secret that Aston Villa need to add defenders to their squad in the winter transfer window and it appears Dean Smith could be about to try and make a move to solve that issue.

According to Football Insider, the new Villans manager is believed to be keen to raid his former club and sign Yoann Barbet from Brentford.

It is understood that the defender has emerged as their main priority this January and are keen to take advantage of the situation.

The 25-year-old’s present deal at Griffin Park is set to expire in the summer and it is thought that Villa could look to make an offer in January to the Bees to see whether they are prepared to risk losing Barbet for nothing.

However, Aston Villa are not thought to be the only team interested in securing the defender, with Championship rivals Stoke City also keen on adding him to their ranks.

The Verdict:

Barbet is obviously someone Smith knows well from his time at Brentford and his possible arrival would certainly benefit Aston Villa immensely.

The defender is extremely versatile, as he can fill in at left-back as well as the centre-back position, an area that the Villans are so desperate to strengthen and add depth to.

January could be the perfect time to test Brentford’s resolve about the 25-year-old, as they will be reluctant to lose him, however, they may be forced to cash in on him should they not be able to agree to a new deal with him.
