Aston Villa to compete for Charlie Kelman

Aston Villa will likely head into the January transfer market this winter as they look to improve their chances of being promoted next season.

The Villans have had a poor start this season to their Championship campaign, which has seen Dean Smith replace Steve Bruce as their new manager as well.

The defence is well documented as an area for immediate improvement, however, it appears that they have their eyes on one of the games brightest attacking talents.

According to a report by Football Insider, Villa are thought to be locked in a battle with the likes of Brentford in a race to sign Charlie Kelman.

The Southend United striker has been raising the eyebrows of a number of clubs with his performances and his goalscoring exploits in the League One outfit in their younger age groups.

It is understood the 16-year-old is yet to be offered a professional deal by the club and a number of clubs are interested in the America Under-18 international who scored 61 goals last season and already has another eight to his name this year.

The Verdict:

Kelman is certainly an exciting prospect and should he continue to perform as he currently is, he will be highly in-demand.

Villa will no doubt have a huge amount of competition in the race for the teenager’s signature, including Smith’s former employers.

However, there will be an argument that the club should be focusing their efforts on bringing in players that will help to improve them immediately, rather than in the future, with the defence being an obvious area of concern.
