The Aston Villa fans who are gathered around the bar in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing reports that the club are set to appoint a new manager.
According to The Sun, the recently relegated Premier League side will announce Roberto Di Matteo as the club’s next manager within the next 48 hours.
They have been without a full-time boss since axing Remi Garde back in April and their meek relegation came as a culmination to a number of years of mediocrity in the top flight.
The 45-year old is expected to be handed the responsibility of getting the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt next season, and he will sign a deal worth a reported £35,000 a week.
There are also suggestions he could be in line of hefty war chest, with the new owners embarking on an ambitious project at Villa Park.
The Italian is thought to have been new owner Dr Tony Xia’s top target since buying the club after he was impressed with the former Chelsea managers pedigree
Having won a Champions League winners medal during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge, the former West Bromwich Albion coach is among the most illustrious currently available.
