Much of Aston Villa’s transfer activity this summer is likely to involve outgoings rather than incomings.
The club’s failure to win promotion back to the Premier League and current financial situation has already seen John Terry leave the Midlands, while a deal to bring Robert Snodgrass back to Villa Park after a successful loan spell seems unlikely in this moment of time.
And now Villa’s dire financial state is set to make them miss out on signing Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
£2.25m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Johnstone spent last season on loan at Aston Villa; however, the Villans could be about to be beaten by rivals West Brom for the 25-year-old’s signature, according to the Daily Mail.
Failing to secure Johnstone will come as a heavy blow to Villa having already lost Terry and Snodgrass, while Jack Grealish continues to be linked with a move away from Villa Park.
The departure of Terry and potential exit of Grealish on top of the unlikely returns of Snodgrass and Johnstone, has seen the majority of Steve Bruce’s core destroyed and it will be hard to see how Villa mount another promotion charge without these positions being adequately replaced.
