Multiple sources including the Daily Mirror and footballpress claim Sir Alex Ferguson is keeping tabs on young Scottish starlet Barry Bannan of Aston Villa.
You could be forgiven for thinking young Bannan’s career at Aston Villa was more or less over until Martin O’Neill left the club. Designated too short and too weedy to make an impact on the Premier League, Bannan has seen several fellow academy starlets make some impact on the first team in recent years.
While the undoubtedly talented midfielder has taken in loan spells at Leeds United, Blackpool and Derby County, Ciaran Clark and Marc Albrighton have been tasting first team action. Both Kevin MacDonald and Gerard Houllier took a real liking to Marc Albrighton and Bannan continued to be shut out, but Alex McLeish, a fellow scot, is finally appreciating his talents.
Having just scored his first Premier League goal in the form of a penalty tucked away against Queens Park Rangers, Bannan has capped off a run of three consecutive starts for Villa in admirable fashion. Alex McLeish is still trying to find his best line up with Villa but Bannan looks like he has pushed himself firmly into the manager’s plans.
Unfortunately for Aston Villa fans, the realisation that they have a genuinely brilliant player is only ever fully confirmed when the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City or Liverpool snatch them away.
It will anger Aston Villa fans immensely if Barry Bannan is indeed the subject of an £18m chase this January of next summer. Having lost Ashley Young, James Milner, Stewart Downing and Gareth Barry in recent years, losing Barry Bannan could really hit hard.
It will be impossible for Aston Villa to make progress if this continues to happen and its sickening to think it could happen again so soon after two terrible losses this summer.
