Villa have continued their rampant style under Dean Smith as they edge closer towards the promotion places.
In what was once threatening to be a season of disaster, the former Brentford boss has marked his arrival brilliant, with Aston Villa charging up the Championship table, with their eyes firmly locked on promotion once again.
It would be dubbed as a great turnaround and their aspirations of reaching the Premier League could be made a lot easier if they signed another quality defender.
Their defence has been solid but with the amount of games they still have to play, they need more squad depth.
A player who could be a brilliant signing is Liverpool’s Joel Matip, who has become completely out of sorts at Anfield.
Matip, who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt, has only started one Premier League game this season in which he scored in.
The 27-year-old arrived at Anfield in 2016 on a free transfer from Schalke with a big reputation. His performances on the pitch haven’t been quite up to standard for a team aspiring to win the Premier League but for Aston Villa, Matip could show his true ability by dropping a division, even on loan.
As a towering centre-back, the Cameroon international could be well equipped to face the Championship and be a massive part in helping Aston Villa reach the top flight.
Despite how good James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe have been of late, Aston Villa would undoubtedly improve defensively with the acquisition of Joel Matip and could be a complete force at the back.
Do you agree that signing Joel Matip is a great idea for Aston Villa… Let us know!
