Aston Villa are down on their luck at the moment but with some inspired transfer dealings during the window, Dean Smith will hope to get his team playing again.
The Villans have quite possibly been the most inconsistent team in the Championship this season, reviving their play-off hopes one week, whilst stumbling to a bad defeat the next.
Considering the squad of talented players they have, expectations are understandably higher than the ninth position Aston Villa currently find themselves in.
Dean Smith will, likewise, realise that having invested during the transfer window, he has been given the tools to build a successful promotion campaign.
Yet the deadline signing of Tom Carroll took many Aston Villa fans by surprise and that may be because they were heavily linked with fellow Swansea midfielder Leroy Fer – a player many were desperate to sign.
Fer, (who is valued at £7.2 million on Transfermarkt) was rumoured with a move to Villa Park but since that failed to materialise, the promotion hopefuls took Tom Carroll away from Swansea instead.
It may have been a late, genius move but in the grand scheme of things, Aston Villa fans may have rather seen Leroy Fer in claret and blue.
Swansea’s captain Leroy Fer is an excellent example of a modern profession that consistently does a job in midfield.
During the 26 appearances he has made this season so far, Fer has turned provider on six occasions, showing that his passing ability also has an end product as well.
Although he’s 29 and Tom Carroll is younger at 26, Fer could have been a far more imposing central-midfielder that may have proven to be a better, more rounded option for Aston Villa.
