McLeish Scouting €4M Rated Quality International

According to The Daily Record, Alex McLeish is to delve back into the transfer market and sign free agent James McFadden.

Alex McLeish has plenty of experience with James McFadden having signed him for Birmingham for around £5m. The Scotland international is a free agent due to his failure to agree new terms with Birmingham after their relegation from the Barclay’s Premier League.

He has been very effective for Birmingham since signing from Everton but suffered a cruciate ligament injury that kept him out for almost the entire 10/11 season. His scoring record since moving to England has not been phenomenal, however during this time he has been deployed in a left wing position as well as up front.

Would James McFadden be a decent acquisition for Aston Villa? Well with the prudent financial approach we are seeing this season, perhaps it is a good prospective signing. The name McFadden doesn’t do much to whet the appetite of glory hungry fans but if you view the deal objectively, I think it’s a good one.

Forget he came from Birmingham. The striking position at Villa is crowded at the moment, but the wing position certainly is not. If McFadden was signed to play left-wing for reasonable wages (<£25,000 p/w), he is surely a good signing.

Villa are so short in numbers for wide players, it is widely accepted that should Charles N’Zogbia or Marc Albrighton get injured, their season will take a dive. Agbonlahor has been performing well on the wing and keeping Albrighton out of the side, but 2 players for each position is necessary and McFadden would be a welcome addition in my book.

Had Villa been splashing the cash this summer, I’d of said going for McFadden is aiming too low. However, given the circumstances, McFadden is an adequate target. What’s the harm in creating a nice Scottish link between the staff, Hutton, Bannan and McFadden anyway? We’ve already got a nice Irish one, maybe Randy Lerner is a collector!

What are your thoughts on a prospective move for James McFadden?
