Steve Bruce will not consider using one of his fringe players, despite needing defensive reinforcements.
The former Manchester City defender has had a torrid time at Aston Villa and has rarely featured for Bruce since he took charge at Villa Park, although he has been affected by a number of injuries in that time.
However, despite making a return to action over the weekend in a charity match, the 30-year-old has no future at the club, even though the Championship outfit do not have the required numbers in defence to maintain a promotion push.
With only James Chester as their recognised senior centre-back, the likes of Mile Jedinak have had to fill in as a makeshift defender, with Tommy Elphick having departed on loan before the end of the transfer window.
Richards could have been an option for Bruce to consider this summer, considering the lack of options the club has at the back.
Although the 30-year-old has not played for the club in over two years, he is a recognised centre-back by trade, whereas Jedinak is a midfielder and it has shown in recent matches.
However, it appears that Bruce has no plans for him to be involved and it would seem the defender will continue to be spending his time at Villa Park in the dark.
