Aston Villa have suffered a turbulent transfer window so far with financial struggles, Jack Grealish’s future and the arrival of new owners dominating the headlines thus far, but if they wish to challenge for promotion once again this season they will need to put these issues to one side and complete a handful of shrewd deals in the transfer market.
The financial implications of Tony Xia’s crisis have undoubtedly stifled the club’s efforts in the transfer market thus far, however, a recent report from The Daily Telegraph has given them reason to believe that some good news is forthcoming.
According to the report, Wolves are set to break their transfer record and trigger Adama Traore’s £18 million release clause before Thursday’s deadline following an impressive season for Middlesbrough.
And the same report claims that Villa are set to receive £3.6 million as part of the deal due to a clause they included as part of his switch from Villa Park to the Riverside Stadium in 2016.
The recent report suggests that Villa were very wise to include a sell-on clause when they sold Traore, but it’s crucial that they make the most of their unexpected payout before the window closes.
Although Villa are in need of further acquisitions across the park, it’s clear that their lack of firepower at centre-forward is the most notable cause for concern ahead of the new season.
Scott Hogan struggled to find the back of the net on a consistent basis last season, whilst Lewis Grabban has since departed for Nottingham Forest.
With these points to consider, there is no doubt that Bruce needs to hone in on a new striker in the coming days, and he may be forced to use the £3.6 million to fund a loan deal or two, rather than a permanent signing.
Either way the club need to delve into the market to ensure they are well prepared for the new season, so the signing of a new striker should become the priority for Villa once Traore completes his transfer to Wolves.
