Aston Villa supporters in the Transfer Tavern are somewhat looking forward to the 2018/19 Championship campaign in the hope that their team can bounce back from play-off heartache last time round.
Steve Bruce’s men produced a fine season to finish fourth in the second tier and thus qualify for the end-of-season lottery, beating Middlesbrough in the semi-finals to reach the Wembley showpiece. Yet they were unable to secure a return to the Premier League as a Tom Cairney goal won the game for Fulham, leaving the Villans consigned to another season in the Championship.
And with financial problems gripping the Midlands giants, the 2018/19 campaign could well be a difficult one for those Villa fans up and down the country, although several are excited at the prospect of some young players breaking through into the first team as a result.
And based on his efforts for the club’s development squad in the last few years, 20-year-old sensation Callum O’Hare could well be called upon more regularly by the cash-strapped club this season.
The attacker joined the Villa academy at the age of seven and has since come up through the youth ranks at Villa Park, in turn becoming a regular for the Under-23s in recent seasons.
And last term saw the 20-year-old hit new heights as he managed ten goals and three assists in 15 appearances in Division Two of Premier League 2, thus meaning he was one of just four players over the course of the campaign to reach double figures.
In fact, O’Hare has impressed so greatly at Villa in the last few years that he has already earned eight senior appearances for the club, four of which coming in the Championship last season as Bruce’s men came agonisingly close to a return to the Premier League.
And with financial problems likely to impact on their recruitment this summer, Bruce may have to place his trust in the young players at Villa Park in the second tier this term – O’Hare is one who appears ready to make the step up on a regular basis.
Thus, with things looking pretty bleak at Villa Park heading into the new campaign, 20-year-old sensation O’Hare can at least provide a crumb of comfort for Villans supporters, with the attacker seemingly ready to be called upon by the cash-strapped club this season.
