Aston Villa supporters were left to bemoan a disappointing display from their side after seeing the Villans go down 2-0 at Wolves on Saturday, inflicting a first Championship defeat on the Midlands giants since the middle of August.
Steve Bruce’s men went into their clash at Molineux off the back of a stunning unbeaten run which had seen them win five of their previous eight league matches, while they also drew the other three. However, that run came to an abrupt end on Saturday as second half goals from Diogo Jota and Leo Bonatini secured a deserved victory for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, and left Villa with much to ponder as they slipped seven points behind their opponents in the Championship table.
However, there may some encouragement for our frustrated resident Villa fans if a recent report from The Scottish Sun is anything to go by, as they outline that the second tier outfit are monitoring Aberdeen shot-stopper Joe Lewis.
The 30-year-old made the move north of the border last year following a four-year stint at Cardiff City, and has certainly made an impression with the Dons having kept 28 clean sheets and shipped just 60 goals in 68 appearances for the club.
And that form helped him into the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Season last term, and with five clean sheets in nine league games this time round the Englishman doesn’t appear to be letting up, and as such he has attracted interest from Bruce’s Villa, who sent scouts to watch him in Aberdeen’s 1-0 success over Hibernian last weekend.
But whether they firm up their interest with a January offer for the goalkeeper very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Goalkeeper Joe Lewis has been making huge strides north of the border with Aberdeen, and was deservedly named in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Season last term such were his impressive efforts between the sticks.
And with five clean sheets in nine league games this time round as well, the 30-year-old continues to prove his worth to manager Derek McInnes, and the club may have some work to do keeping him in January as Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa have reportedly been keeping an eye on his progress.
The Villans currently have Sam Johnstone on loan from Manchester United for the season but you wonder whether they feel their chances of signing him permanently are diminishing, hence the interest in Lewis.
But only time will tell whether the Championship club do indeed firm up their interest in the Dons shot-stopper in the New Year.
