Birmingham City suffered a devastating defeat at Championship high-flyers Preston North End on Saturday, which handed Garry Monk’s side their fourth defeat in a row, in what has become a worrying slump.
Yet that may not be the worst news of the week for Blues’ fans, with the EFL set to launch their hearing into the alleged Financial Fair Play breach at St Andrew’s.
A report on the Mail Online suggests that sources are expecting City to be sanctioned as a result, with the EFL pushing for a 12-point deduction and transfer ban to be imposed.
If, as Monk suggested in the build up to Saturday’s game, they were in a “sticky patch” before, then the subsequent result and impending deduction would seem to have superglued his team to the floor!
Even without taking into account the possible deduction — which could see the Blues sit in 19th position, and just two points above the relegation zone — the disastrous run of results is threatening to derail a season in which they were trying to rebuild following last season’s nightmare.
Looking at the run of fixtures to come for Birmingham, and it will be enough to give fans nightmares of their own.
Their next three games see them play the teams in fourth, third and second respectively. Failure to pick up points in those games could see City in the relegation zone before they play bottom of the table Ipswich in the middle of April.
Monk can point to the fact that his side were extremely unlucky to lose at Deepdale, but it is points over performances that matter at the business end of the season.
Whether there is to be a points deduction, or not, City need to get themselves out of the situation they find themselves in, and Monk must repay the loyalty of the legion of fans that followed the side to Lancashire on Saturday, with results.
The possible alternative outcome is unthinkable.
