It has been an immensely frustrating season for Scott Hogan so far in the Championship.
The forward’s failure to fire in front of goal for Aston Villa led to him being loaned out to Sheffield United in January where has continued to struggle despite being part of a thriving side. However, the Blades’ 3-2 defeat to Bristol City last Saturday may have seen Hogan turn the corner as he finally managed to grab his first goal of this year’s campaign albeit in a losing effort.
An impressive headed finish by the 26-year-old may have been overshadowed by Chris Wilder’s side’s late collapse but it could be hugely significant for the club in their race for an automatic promotion position. If Hogan can go on a run of form in the remaining seven fixtures, he will be taking the pressure off of the likes of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick who have both had to be on top form this season.
Furthermore, in a period which is undoubtedly going to have even more twists and turns, the former Brentford ace could cement his place in the history books at United if he can score the goals that take the club back to the Premier League after 12 years away.
On a wider spectrum, it could be argued that Hogan is fighting for his Championship career after two seasons where he has failed to impress. Signed by Villa in 2017, the Republic of Ireland international has been incredibly poor in-front of goal during his time at the club and therefore it is unclear where he could end up next season.
A solid end to his loan spell with the Blades could see Wilder opt to sign him permanently yet an inability to deliver may have to see him drop down the divisions.
In what is an extremely important period for both Hogan and United, the next five weeks of action will undoubtedly help to shape the futures of both parties.
