£1.8m-rated summer addition is needed if Leeds are to challenge for promotion

Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the summer transfer window, what with their team clearly in need of reinforcements to challenge for promotion next season.

Paul Heckingbottom’s men made a fine start to the 2017/18 Championship season but soon tailed off, resulting in the sacking of Thomas Christiansen back in February, to be replaced by Barnsley chief Heckingbottom. Yet he was unable to reignite a promotion charge, with the Whites eventually finishing in 13th place in the second tier table, 15 points adrift of the play-off positions.

As such, several of our resident Leeds fans are hoping their team can make the necessary signings to propel them up the division next term, which is why they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking them with a move for Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

And sealing a deal for the £1.8 million-rated youngster (as per Transfermarkt) appears needed if Leeds are to indeed challenge for promotion to the Premier League next season.

Ultimately, the goalkeeping situation was a problematic one for both Christiansen and indeed Heckingbottom last term, with summer signing Felix Wiedwald doing little to convince either of his capabilities between the sticks.

And with veteran shot-stopper Andy Lonergan also failing to impress, it was 21-year-old Bailey Peacock-Farrell who donned the gloves for their final 11 games of the campaign, in which time he performed reasonably well to suggest he could be the long-term answer.

However, with little experience of Championship football, it would be an almighty ask for Peacock-Farrell to maintain his consistency over the course of a long, hard second tier campaign, whereas Gunn did just that on loan at Norwich City this season.

The 22-year-old started all 46 of the Canaries’ league games this time round, keeping 15 clean sheets and shipping 60 goals to help Daniel Farke’s side to 14th place in the table, level on points with Leeds.

Yet the England Under-21 international impressed greatly during his loan stint at Carrow Road to suggest that he is a hugely adept goalkeeper at Championship level, the sort Leeds are seeking to finally sustain a promotion push.

In fact, Gunn did so well during the 2017/18 season that he earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s senior England squad back in November, and although he didn’t play in the friendly against Brazil, just the fact he was drafted in suggests that he is in the Three Lions boss’ thinking for the future.

And no wonder after the season he had at Norwich, and it’s those efforts in particular in dealing with the demands and rigours of Championship football that the Leeds hierarchy must be interested in.

Ultimately, many sides that have won promotion over the years have had a reliable shot-stopper between the sticks – Gunn proved he could be that man this time round.

As such, sealing a deal for the 22-year-old would without doubt enhance Leeds’ promotion credentials next term.
