Leeds United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side end the 2017/18 Championship season on a high courtesy of a 2-0 success over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.
Paul Heckingbottom’s men made a fast start to the campaign and looked very much to be in contention for promotion to the Premier League, only for things to go horribly wrong for former boss Thomas Christiansen, who subsequently lost his job. And while things haven’t picked up brilliantly under Heckingbottom, the Whites did at least finish the season with a win thanks to goals from Kemar Roofe and Kalvin Phillips at Elland Road on Saturday.
Consequently, there have been many satisfied Leeds supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are now turning their attentions towards the summer and what business their side must seek to do to turn into genuine promotion contenders.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Leeds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Leicester City defender Robert Huth will leave the club at the end of the season.
And were the Yorkshire giants to do a deal to bring the £4.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to Elland Road this summer, it would no doubt enhance their promotion credentials.
Ultimately, the 33-year-old has enjoyed a fine stint at Leicester since moving there back in 2015, appearing 93 times for the Midlands giants and bagging six goals in the process, including helping inspire the team to the most unlikely of title successes back in 2016.
At the time, the German was one of the best centre backs in the Premier League, leading by example at the back and forming a formidable partnership with Wes Morgan to help Claudio Ranieri’s side win the division by ten points of second place Arsenal.
And while he has struggled with injury this term, it was only 12 months ago that Huth continued to command regular football at the King Power Stadium such were his impressive efforts in the heart of their backline – arguably, he remains a Premier League player to this day.
And that is why Leeds simply must seek to lure him to Elland Road this summer.
They themselves appear to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements given they have been linked with re-signing Kyle Bartley in recent times, although Swansea’s seemingly imminent relegation has reportedly put pay to those chances.
And having conceded 64 goals last term, the most of any side in the top 15 in the Championship, it’s obvious that Heckingbottom must strengthen his defensive ranks if they are to mount a promotion push next term – Huth’s arrival would do just that.
The 33-year-old has vast amounts of experience at the top level, which itself can only benefit the current Leeds squad, while he is also a combative and industrious centre back, one that will win his fair share of tackles and headers, as well as making telling interceptions and blocks.
Ultimately, Huth is the sort of defender any side in the Championship would benefit from having in their squad – Leeds must seek to make that a reality if they are to enhance their promotion credentials ahead of the 2018/19 season.
