Bielsa done: Now Leeds must seek to make equally-ambitious move for £9m-rated star

Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new era at Elland Road following the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as the club’s new manager last week.

The former Argentina and Chile boss replaces Paul Heckingbottom in the Whites hotseat following the Englishman’s departure earlier this month, what with the 40-year-old only winning four of his 16 matches in charge of the Yorkshire giants. And the highly-rated Bielsa is the man to take over from the ex-Barnsley chief at Leeds, which has brought huge amounts of optimism to our resident Whites supporters, many of whom are hoping that he can be the man to finally lead them back to the Premier League.

However, for that to happen, reinforcements will be needed over the summer, and as such several of those Leeds fans lining up at the bar have shown intrigue in recent reports suggesting that Liverpool could be set to offload goalkeeper Simon Mignolet this summer.

And with the goalkeeping position at Elland Road somewhat uncertain, Leeds must seek to make a move for the £9 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), one that would be equally as ambitious as luring Bielsa to the club as the new head coach.

Ultimately, the Belgium international has spent the vast majority of his Liverpool career as the club’s number one shot-stopper, although manager Jurgen Klopp opted for Loris Karius back in January to suggest that Mignolet’s future prospects at Anfield looked bleak.

And with no Premier League appearance in 2018, as well as the regular reports that the Reds are after another goalkeeper, it’s clear that the 30-year-old has no future at the Merseyside giants, and as such will surely be seeking his next move to progress with his career.

And while taking a step down to the Championship may not be his ideal choice, the feel-good factor coming out of Leeds ahead of the new season is something many may want to be a part of.

Several of our resident Whites supporters are growing in confidence that Bielsa can be the man to lead them back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004, with the Argentine an extremely highly-rated coach who has been hugely praised by Pep Guardiola in the past.

As such, Mignolet could well be back in the top-flight in the not-too-distant future were he to move to Elland Road, but significantly his arrival would provide Leeds with a solid and reliable shot-stopper between the sticks.

The goalkeeping department was a problem area last term with neither Felix Wiedwald nor Andy Lonergan convincing of their capabilities, to the point that 21-year-old Bailey Peacock-Farrell donned the gloves in the latter stages of the campaign.

But whether he has what it takes to produce the goods over the course of a Championship season very much remains to be seen, yet there is no doubting Mignolet’s quality after spells at both Liverpool and Sunderland.

Yes, the Belgian ace hasn’t been the world-class goalkeeper Liverpool have needed in recent years, but he is still a hugely adept one at Premier League level – thus, he’d surely be an asset in the second tier.

And with a deal for Bielsa done last week, Leeds must make an equally ambitious move to lure linked-away Mignolet to Elland Road.
