Bielsa must seek to address key Leeds concern by moving for Eldin Jakupovic

Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their side make a great start to the new Championship season to sit top of the division after four matches.

There was much optimism and anticipation among Leeds fans during the summer following the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as the club’s new head coach, and they have made a fine start to the new campaign to suggest that they could well be set for a return to the Premier League. The Whites brushed aside Stoke City 3-1 on the opening weekend before backing that up with a thumping 4-1 win at Derby County, and they then made it three wins on the spin last weekend by beating Rotherham United before drawing 2-2 at Swansea City on Tuesday.

Thus, there are many delighted Leeds fans up and down the country at present, although some are still somewhat concerned regarding the goalkeeping situation at Elland Road, with some calling for Bielsa to address that problem by delving into the loan window.

And one man the Argentine could seek to bring to Elland Road is Leicester City outcast Eldin Jakupovic, valued at £900,000 by Transfermarkt.

Ultimately, there was much uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping ranks last season at Leeds given both Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan struggled to convince of their capabilities between the sticks, thus leaving 21-year-old Bailey Peacock-Farrell to finish the campaign as the club’s number one.

And while he has retained the faith of Bielsa so far this term, there have been some nervy moments for the young shot-stopper to suggest that they may not be able to rely on him over the course of a long, hard slog that is the Championship season, while the fact that Jamal Blackman has yet to feature may also suggest that the jury is still out on him.

Thus, with uncertainty still among the goalkeeping ranks, that is clearly a key concern for the Yorkshire giants heading into the remainder of the season – a concern they must seek to deal with by moving for Leicester’s Jakupovic.

The 33-year-old made the move to the King Power Stadium back in 2017 after impressing at fellow Premier League side Hull City the season before, in which the shot-stopper kept five clean sheets in 22 appearances to give the Tigers a fighting chance of staying up, although he ultimately wasn’t able to keep them in the top-flight.

Nonetheless, his fine efforts at the KCOM Stadium not only earned him a move to Leicester 12 months ago, but it also underlined his credentials as an accomplished goalkeeper at Premier League level – thus, he could surely do a job in the second tier.

And with Danny Ward making the move to the Foxes during the close season, Jakupovic now looks to be the third-choice under Claude Puel, and at the age of 33, he may feel that first team football is imperative given the stage of his career – Leeds could offer him that.

As such, with some doubts still over the goalkeeping ranks at Elland Road, Bielsa must seek to address that key concern by moving for former Switzerland international Jakupovic this month.
