Leeds United struggled to pose any real attacking threat in their disappointing performance against Norwich City on Saturday, which saw the Canaries leave Elland Road with an impressive 3-1 victory.
And the Whites’ dismal performance well and truly highlighted the fact that Marcelo Bielsa can’t do without Jack Clarke in his starting lineup and needed the midfielder’s creativity against Norwich.
The manager picked Tyler Roberts to start the match with Clarke on the bench but the decision soon backfired as Daniel Farke’s men took an early grip on the match that only saw Leeds find the back of the net in stoppage time.
The home side’s performance lacked direction, while players like Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe failed to create the spark that Bielsa and the club’s fans were hoping for on the night.
With that said, Roberts also never really looked threatening or capable of producing a match deciding moment to turn the tie in Leeds’ favour.
Bielsa and Leeds might have had a better chance of putting Norwich under real pressure if Clarke had started the match but instead they were made to play catch-up by the time Clarke took the field just after half-time.
The 18-year-old Clarke has been terrific in the matches he’s featured this season and has become quite a regular in the team in recent months.
His pace and flowing-style of playing have been a real plus for this Leeds team and have given Bielsa something different to use as an attacking weapon.
It would be quite a big surprise if the manager picks the same attack this coming weekend when Leeds travel to Middlesbrough for an important clash at the Riverside Stadium.
More importantly, Leeds will need their attacking spark again come kick-off and that will most likely force Bielsa to pick Clarke to start the match again.
The midfielder’s presence will also be encouragement for Roofe, who has capitalised on a number of Clarke’s crosses and deliveries in the past.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
