In our latest instalment of the Flashback series, we take a look back at a certain moment and look at how things might have changed those initial reactions.
When Chris Wood was sold to Burnley in 2017 for a transfer thought to be worth around £15m (BBC), there was a lot of anger amongst the Leeds United fans on social media – although that emotional response was not necessarily towards the club.
Taking a look back at the Whites’ official announcement that the New Zealand international had completed his move to the Premier League outfit on Twitter, it is rather evident to see that a vast majority of supporters vented their frustrations at the forward for deciding to head to the top-flight club.
Perhaps, fans were disgusted with the striker as he ruled himself out of their game with Sunderland just prior to his imminent switch to Turf Moor and were furious that he allegedly refused to play for them.
Here are what some of them said at the time…
No we dont

I don’t wish him well

Indeed, Leeds fans were, perhaps, within reason to vent their fury at Wood for effectively ‘ditching them at the altar’, however, the New Zealander did put his side of the story across around six weeks after his completed move.
In an exclusive interview with the Independent, the striker announced the decision was “out of my hands” and revealed that it was not because he did not want to, but rather because he was not allowed.
Now, whether Leeds fans accept that side of the story is debatable, however it might not be too difficult to suggest that Marcelo Bielsa needs a player of his quality leading the line at Elland Road now.
Wood was nothing but prolific during his time with the Yorkshire outfit, as he managed to score 44 goals in 88 appearances for the Whites (Transfermarkt) – working out to an impressive goal every other game.
Kemar Roofe was doing the business for the Whites last season with his 15 goals in 34 matches before sealing a summer move to Anderlecht.
Patrick Bamford, who was signed for a fee thought to be worth up to £10m in 2018, has become the key man for Leeds (with Eddie Nketiah looking to provide the additional firepower whilst on loan from Arsenal), however he has struggled and has not been as effective as Bielsa has needed.
The Argentine had strong thoughts on their poor finishing last season as he believed it cost them their Premier League opportunity and the former Middlesbrough man has not been helping with matters, despite the Whites sitting top of the Championship.
Bamford has come in for criticism, despite having hit four in his eight Championship games so far, as he has plenty of shots that he fails to make the most of in games. According to data collected by WhoScored, the 26-year-old has already had a total of 32 attempts at goal this season, but only 12 of those have been on target.
Wood might be playing at a step up in the Premier League, however he has started to hit his stride with Burnley. The New Zealander managed to put two past Norwich City at the weekend and kicked his goal tally for the season off – taking his total to 26 goals in 79 appearances for the Clarets (Transfermarkt).
Admittedly, that may not sound all that impressive, but the 27-year-old appears to be more accurate than Bamford is as he has 50% success rate of hitting the target (five of his ten shots).
Bridges may have been burnt a couple of years ago, however it is quite clear they never managed to replace Wood when they needed to and it could be rather easy to assume that Bielsa is desperate to have a player of the Kiwi’s talent at Elland Road still.
Leeds fans, regardless of opinions on Wood, do the Whites need a player of his quality in front of goal? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them in the comments section below!Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
