Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much hoping that their team will indeed make shrewd signings during the summer transfer window in a bid to mount a Championship promotion charge next time round.
The Yorkshire giants made a fine start to the 2017/18 season and were well placed for a return to the Premier League back in November, only for things to go awry in the succeeding months, which ultimately resulted in Thomas Christiansen’s departure. Paul Heckingbottom replaced the Dane in the Elland Road hotseat, but did little to turn around their fortunes with the Whites eventually finishing in 13th place in the second tier, 15 points adrift of the top six.
Thus, there are several expectant Leeds supporters in the Tavern at present, and they could indeed be set for some good news if recent reports are anything to go by, with their club reportedly keen on a loan move for Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
Yet Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are also thought to be keen on the £1.8 million-rated youngster (as per Transfermarkt), although the greater likelihood of first team football in a league he knows well should convince Gunn to forget about Parkhead and instead opt for Elland Road.
Ultimately, Craig Gordon appears to be the undisputed number one at Celtic Park at present, with it looking difficult for anyone to take the gloves off the 35-year-old after a reasonably solid campaign.
And with Gunn likely to leave City in search of regular football, as he got at Norwich City this time round, his time north of the border isn’t likely to be overly fruitful, whereas things look a lot brighter at Leeds for the 22-year-old.
The Whites struggled greatly in the goalkeeping department this season with neither Felix Wiedwald nor Andy Lonergan convincing greatly of their credentials, to the point that the former was dropped by both Christiansen and Heckingbottom over the course of the campaign.
That left the impressive Bailey Peacock-Farrell to deputise for the Yorkshire heavyweights, and while he did well for the most part, there are some concerns over his season-long capabilities in the number one role.
Whereas no such doubts are had regarding Gunn’s efforts, what with the Englishman playing all 46 of Norwich’s Championship matches this season, in which time he kept an impressive 15 clean sheets and shipped 60 goals.
And with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad back in November, it’s clear that the 22-year-old has a bright future in the game, but is also a goalkeeper for the present as well – the sort Leeds are after if they harbour promotion ambitions.
And with the opening for first team opportunities seemingly greater at Leeds than at Celtic, the Englishman should forget about the latter and instead opt for Heckingbottom’s side this summer.
