Forget Pennington: Leeds must look to sign his £6.3m-rated Everton teammate instead

Leeds United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side record just their third Championship victory of 2018 courtesy of a 2-1 success over relegation-threatened Barnsley at Elland Road.

Paul Heckingbottom’s men went into their clash with their Yorkshire rivals having lost to Aston Villa and Preston North End in their preceding league encounters, thus leaving new boss Heckingbottom with just two wins from his opening 13 matches in charge. Yet the 40-year-old got one over on his former employers on Saturday as goals from Tom Pearce and Ezgjan Alioski either side of a Paudie O’Connor own goal sealed all three points for the Whites, in turn moving them back into the top half of the Championship table.

As such, there have been many delighted Leeds fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can finish the season strongly to thus build momentum ahead of a possible promotion push in 2018/19.

In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Whites supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that their club will seek to make Matthew Pennington’s loan move permanent in the summer.

Yet the Yorkshire heavyweights should forget about a move for the 23-year-old this summer, and instead seek to land his £6.3 million-rated Everton teammate Ademola Lookman (as per Transfermarkt).

Ultimately, the 20-year-old has struggled for regular football at Goodison Park since his move there from Charlton Athletic back in 2017, this all despite netting less than a minute into his debut in their 4-0 rout of Manchester City in January 2017.

In fact, Lookman’s difficulties in the first half of this season prompted the England Under-20 World Cup winner to seek a loan move to RB Leipzig in January, where he has since scored two goals and laid on two assists in eight appearances.

And with Theo Walcott arriving from Arsenal during the winter, and Yannick Bolasie returning from injury, it doesn’t look like Lookman will command regular football at Everton upon his return this summer, and as such could be looking at another move away prior to the 2018/19 campaign.

And Leeds must ask the question.

Ultimately, the forward has enormous talent and potential just waiting to be fulfilled, with Lookman fearless in the attacking third and always looking to take defenders on – it was somewhat surprising that, during Everton struggles in 2017, he did not get much of a look-in.

And if Heckingbottom’s side are serious about sustaining a promotion challenge next season, they need strength in every area of the squad, while the attacking ranks have to full of flair and creativity such is the long, hard slog that is a Championship season – Lookman’s arrival would give them that.

And with Pennington not overly convincing during his loan stint at Elland Road, the Whites should opt against a permanent move for the 23-year-old, and instead seek to lure his Everton teammate Lookman to Elland Road this summer.
