Sometimes one player can make all the difference for a club and one man may have proved to have been enough for Leeds United to obtain an automatic promotion spot to the Premier League.
Marcelo Bielsa may have worked wonders with the squad he inherited at Elland Road last summer, however, you can not help but think that they may have been one clinical striker short throughout the entire campaign.
And, that man could well have been Matej Vydra.
There did not appear to be a day that went by last summer where the Whites were linked with a move for the Czech Republic international and it seems they were very close to actually bringing him to Elland Road from Derby County.
It is understood the two sides had agreed to an £11million deal for the forward, however, Sky Sports revealed that a breakdown in personal terms meant a deal would not be concluded. The 27-year-old would then go on to join Premier League outfit Burnley instead, where he has hardly been used.
Although it is rather speculative to suggest what might have happened if Vydra was at Leeds this season, his track record in the Championship is one that speaks volumes.
The Czech forward has been prolific in the second tier of English football over the years, especially in last season’s campaign with Derby where he scored 21 goals in his 40 appearances.
Patrick Bamford was brought into the club instead, and although he spent a lot of the time on the sidelines with a horrible knee injury, it could be argued that he failed to show just why Leeds decided to spend around £10m on him.
Kemar Roofe may have been outstanding when fit, having found the back of the net 14 times, however, he was also found guilty on a number of occasions of not being as clinical enough this season.
Of course, promotion to the Premier League is still on the cards for Leeds, however, Bielsa must surely have some regret that the club could not get the deal for Vydra over the line last summer.
