Leeds United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their side’s winless Championship run continue courtesy of a 2-2 draw away at struggling Reading on Saturday.
Paul Heckingbottom’s men went into their clash at the Madejski Stadium off the back of successive 3-0 defeats at the hands of Middlesbrough and Wolves, results which have all but ended their hopes of finishing in the top six this season. And the Whites were unable to get back to winning ways on Saturday either, falling behind to Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s 16th minute goal only to hit back through Pontus Jansson and Pablo Hernandez, although the Royals salvaged a point thanks to a Eunan O’Kane own goal 11 minutes into the second half.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Leeds fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can end the season strongly and thus build some momentum ahead of an expected promotion challenge next time round.
And many are already turning their attentions towards the summer and thus who their team could look to sign to bolster their ranks, with the goalkeeping department an area that needs particular attention.
Ultimately, both Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan have proven unconvincing between the sticks so far this term, sharing 35 of Leeds’ 37 Championship games this season, in which time they have conceded 46 goals between them.
That’s not a massive number by any means, but neither have shown enough to either Heckingbottom or former manager Thomas Christiansen, to the point that 21-year-old Bailey Peacock-Farrell currently has the gloves, and may well keep them after an impressive display against Reading.
However, there will be question marks over whether the young shot-stopper has what it takes to regularly perform at that level, and as such the Whites must seek to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks with the addition of Wayne Hennessey this summer.
The 31-year-old is out of contract at Crystal Palace at the end of the season (as per Transfermarkt) but has been the Eagles’ first-choice for the majority of the season, having started in each of their last ten Premier League matches.
And with much experience in both the top-flight and indeed the Championship, alongside 73 caps for Wales, he would bring much-needed stability to the goalkeeping ranks at Elland Road, and could well be the ideal mentor for Peacock-Farrell as he seeks to improve as a shot-stopper.
More importantly though, the 31-year-old remains a quality goalkeeper and one that can be relied upon, be it commanding his box or general shot-stopping, which is something that cannot be said of messrs Wiedwald and Lonergan.
And with a new deal seemingly not in the offing, Heckingbottom must urge owner Andrea Radrizzani to make a move for the £3.6 million-rated shot-stopper (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
