According to The Sun, Stoke City are targeting Southampton striker Sam Gallagher this summer.
Sam Gallagher has been with the Saints since 2012, but now, at 22-years-old, it seems he isn’t close to establishing himself in the first team with the south coast club, who now appear ready to cash in on the striker.
Gallagher spent last season on loan in the second tier with Birmingham City, and endured a mixed spell at St Andrew’s with goal droughts interspersed with periods of solid form. With youth on his side though, and all the ingredients and attributes there, Gallagher could blossom into a complete and consistent Championship hitman very soon.
With Stoke’s interest apparent, any other clubs who would do well to secure the forward’s services must now act quickly.
Leeds are among the Championship sides who might want to consider making a move for the former England under-20 international. It is no secret that Marcelo Bielsa is chasing a new striker this summer, and with his club having missed out on several top targets already during this transfer window, Gallagher could be the best bet the new Elland Road boss has left.
Leeds have already missed out on the signing of Mo Eisa, and with other rumoured targets such as Matej Vydra, Abel Hernandez and Jack Marriott looking increasingly out of reach, Leeds’ options for a new frontman are dwindling.
Gallagher would be a bit of a gamble. After all, 17 goals in 89 career Championship appearances is hardly prolific. The potential is there though, and the forward’s 6’4” frame would certainly give Bielsa something to build his attack around.
Whilst the goals haven’t always come for Gallagher, his link play has regularly shone. His presence for the Whites could help to get the best out of the likes of Kemar Roofe.
Whilst Gallagher wouldn’t have been anyone at Leeds’ first choice, of the alternatives they have remaining to them, he looks like the pick of the bunch.
