January move for Juan Foyth would seriously strengthen Leeds’ promotion hopes

According to a recent report from Argentinian media outlet AS, Leeds United are interested in a move for defender Juan Foyth. The 20-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Tottenham and has done since 2017, although with just eight senior appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, his future at the North London club is very unclear.

And reports suggest that Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds are eyeing up a January move for the defender, and with the centre back ranks somewhat depleted at Elland Road, a New Year move for Bielsa’s compatriot would seriously strengthen the Whites’ promotion hopes in the second half of the season.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Bielsa’s men have made an excellent start to the 2018/19 Championship campaign in winning six and losing just one of their opening 12 league matches, although they are currently embarking on a somewhat testing spell having won just one of their last four matches.

Yes, they certainly have enough quality in the first team to get back to winning ways, starting against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, but there are concerns among some that the squad simply isn’t deep enough to deal with the long, hard slog that is the Championship campaign, especially if Leeds harbour ambitions of winning promotion.

Defensively, there are not loads of options for Bielsa to call upon with Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper the first-choice centre back pairing, yet Gaetano Berardi hasn’t featured in any of their last six games due to injury, thus leaving 22-year-old Conor Shaughnessy as the only other fit centre back.

And with that predicament the case in other areas of the squad as well, January could prove to be a vital month for Leeds, and a deal for Bielsa’s Argentine compatriot Foyth is one they simply have to get done.

The 20-year-old has unsurprisingly found first team football hard to come by at Tottenham in mustering just eight senior appearances for the North London club, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, and Jan Vertonghen, as well as Eric Dier, ahead of him in the pecking order.

But this season has been a particular problem for the Argentina Under-20 international given he hasn’t featured at all for Pochettino’s side, and has only made one matchday squad, which came in their Carabao Cup win over Watford last month – thus, first team opportunities aren’t likely anytime soon.

Yet Foyth clearly has talent in prompting Spurs to lure him to the club last summer, while the fact that he did appear occasionally in the Champions League and FA Cup last term suggests that Pochettino does indeed feel he has what it takes to succeed in the Tottenham first team.

As such, that must surely be of keen interest to Bielsa and Leeds, as bringing Foyth to the club would not only bolster and strengthen the centre back ranks, but he’d also bring even greater competition to that area of the pitch, thus forcing the best out of everyone.

And with Leeds having twice got into positions to win promotion in the last two seasons, and then failing to sustain that level as the season wore on, deepening the squad should be of paramount importance to Bielsa and the club’s hierarchy come January – thus, a move for Foyth would seriously strengthen their promotion hopes.
