Leeds fans will have been waiting for the day that Marcelo Bielsa brings in one of his former players to help kick them on towards promotion. Some young Argentine star or maybe a Lille or a Marseille player. They’re getting their wish now too, as Eldesmarque has linked them with a move for Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Iturraspe.
The Spanish midfielder has been told that his contract at the Basque club is not getting renewed, which means that the 30-year-old is now set to start searching for a new club after nine and a half seasons with the La Liga club.
It looks like it would be a good signing for Bielsa too. The Spaniard, twice capped at the highest level by his country, has years of experience playing against the very best in the domestic scene in Spain and that sort of experience would make him a perfect fit in the Championship under Bielsa at Elland Road.
More importantly, he could be set to come in and fill a void in the squad, should Kalvin Phillips be poached this summer. After Phillips’ performances last season it would not come as a shock to see Aston Villa sign him, especially considering they’re eyeing him up, even if they’re currently not prepared to meet Leeds’ £30m valuation, according to The Sun.
Iturraspe has played the role that Bielsa deploys in this Leeds side before. The pair obviously worked together for two seasons as the Argentine managed Bilbao between 2011 and 2013, and they could now be set to share a changing room once again.
It’s not done and dusted that the Spaniard will sign for the Whites, though. According to the article, the experienced midfield veteran wants to continue paying in either England or Spain, but as he believes he can still offer a lot to the club he ends up at this summer, the player will not rush over his decision.
Leeds fans, would you take Iturraspe this summer? Let us know and comment below!
