Danny Mills has suggested that Rangers defender Connor Goldson would be a good signing for Leeds United, before making a claim over Virgil van Dijk.
The 27-year-old centre-back is attracting interest from a number of English clubs, with Leeds being joined by Premier League side West Ham United in a race to seal his signature this summer. With such interest emerging in the former Brighton defender, a latest report by Football Insider has claimed that Ibrox sources are desperate to keep him at the club.
Speaking on Leeds’ interest, Mills gave his opinion on a potential deal, debating whether or not the former Shrewsbury man could handle the Premier League. He told: Football Insider:
“There will always be that worry, the Premier League has some of the best players in the world but equally, everybody needs an opportunity.
“Who would have thought that Sheffield United would have done so well? A lot of those players played in League One and the Championship and people did not give them much hope, including me, but they have proved us all wrong.
“Sometimes a quality player needs an opportunity.
“People did not think that Van Dijk could do it early on. That is why he went to Southampton.
“Players need an opportunity and Goldson may just need somebody to put faith in him.”
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has started Goldson in almost every game since he took charge at the Scottish club, indicating that the defender is a firm favourite of the manager. Prior to his arrival in the Scottish Premiership, Goldson spent time with Brighton, Cheltenham and Shrewsbury, starting his professional career with the latter.
It remains to be seen whether or not the centre-back can handle the likes of Sergio Aguero and Marcus Rashford next season if he features in the Premier League but the defender could be a good addition for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and provide a strong replacement for Ben White, who is set to return to Brighton upon the expiry of his loan deal next month.
If Goldson can get anywhere near the same standing as PFA Player of the Year Van Dijk, a summer deal could prove to be one of the best transfers in Leeds’ recent history.
