Leeds: Fans react as club terminate Vurnon Anita’s contract - Leeds United

Loads of Leeds United supporters have been reacting on social media after the Whites announced that Vurnon Anita’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent.

Anita had entered the final year of his contract at Elland Road, but had been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Marcelo Bielsa, who instructed the Dutchman to train away from the Whites’ first-team at Thorp Arch following his return for pre-season training (Football Insider).

The Championship outfit had spent the summer trying to facilitate a transfer for the 30-year-old, but have agreed to part ways with the 2020-free agent a year early with no deal in the making.

Greek side Panathinaikos had been heavily credited with interest earlier in the window. However, they required Anita to seek the termination of his Leeds contract as they would otherwise be unable to afford his contract (SDNA).

Super agent Mino Raiola later confirmed that Panathinaikos were interested in signing Anita this summer, but failed to reach an agreement with the Shamrock for his client as Leeds were slow to terminate his deal in West Yorkshire.

A move to the Greek Super League may now re-emerge, though a return to the Netherlands has also been suggested (Leeds Live) after he spent last season on loan with Willem II in the Eredivisie – making 31 appearances across all competitions (TransferMarkt).

The 30-year-old was rarely seen at Elland Road following his arrival as a free agent in 2017 after being released by Newcastle United – making 22 outings for the Whites during a sporadic campaign prior to Bielsa’s arrival.

Leeds fans have now been quick to share their reactions to his departure on social media, with many supporters happy to see the back of the Dutchman.
