Leeds: Fans react as Roberts makes injury return in U23s draw

Many Leeds United supporters have been reacting on social media after Tyler Roberts was named in the Whites’ Under 23s squad that were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace on Monday afternoon.

Roberts is yet to feature for Marcelo Bielsa’s West Yorkshire outfit this term, as the Gloucester-born centre-forward was forced to undergo a minor operation to drain fluid from his knee at the start of the summer (Yorkshire Evening Post).

The injury meant Roberts was required to miss both play-off semi-final clashes with Derby County in May, having made his senior Leeds debut last September and featured in 31 fixtures across all competitions last season (TransferMarkt).

Bielsa even hinted in August that the six-time Wales international had undergone a further operation to help speed up his recovery, and that it was another issue beyond his knee that was keeping him on the sidelines.

Carlos Corberan was able to make use of Roberts on Monday, though, as the Whites U23s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a draw away to Crystal Palace thanks heavily to the efforts of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The on-loan goalkeeper from Lorient, who the Elland Road natives have an option-to-buy, was busy throughout the tie, and pulled off numerous saves to keep the hosts at bay – including denying Nya Kirby from the penalty spot.

Roberts, on the other hand, was introduced to proceedings at half-time as the replacement for Liam McCarron, and looked sharp from the off, with plenty of movement in and around the box and an eye for a shot, worthy of a seven out of ten match rating from Leeds Live.

Leeds supporters, meanwhile, were buoyed from the first mention of Roberts on the U23s teamsheet….
