Leeds fans have had little to celebrate over the last few months. The only positive news they got was when Marcelo Bielsa confirmed back in May he would see out the second year of his deal, BBC, despite the club’s play-off heartbreak against Derby, although they could be set for more bad news if this flop signs in the coming weeks.
The flop in question is one that will bring groans to Leeds fans as soon as you read the name, and it pains us to say it but the Whites are being linked with a move for Middlesbrough’s Jordan Hugill. Yes, that Jordan Hugill, the 27-year-old striker no longer passes off as young and has scored an average of one goal every four games over the last three seasons with 30 goals in 121 games, stats via Transfermarkt.
Across those three seasons, we’ve seen the English striker underperform for Preston, West Ham and Middlesbrough, and if Leeds do act upon the recent links from yesterday’s edition of The Sun, transcribed by HITC, then Bielsa may not be the genius that we’ve all come to believe him to be.
This isn’t the first time that the Yorkshire club have taken an interest in the goal-shy striker either. According to Leeds Live last summer Hugill was being looked at as a striking option to fire the Elland Road side up the table in the 2018/19 season, although fortunately, they missed out on the then-West Ham man.
Boro snapped him up to the Leeds’ fans’ delight, and now is not the time to go back in for him. The last striker they poached from Boro was Patrick Bamford, and that has proven to be a disaster in itself. Bamford could only deliver nine Championship goals in an injury-hit season, and the chances are Hugill wouldn’t even be able to do that in a Leeds shirt next season.
If the Boro man did swap The Riverside for Elland Road it would a pointless move, his Transfermarkt valuation of £5.4m shouldn’t be enough to fool you either, this one would be woeful, and after being burnt with Bamford it’s high time Bielsa brought in a real striker capable of delivering 20+ goals in the 2019/20 campaign.
