Former England international Kevin Phillips has said that he doesn’t expect Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa to sign Joe Hart this summer.
The 33-year-old former England international will be available on a free transfer this summer, having experienced a significant decline from his country’s number one and Manchester City’s first choice stopper to backup at Burnley. Struggling for minutes with Sean Dyche’s side, Hart has played a peripheral role this season, failing to make a single Premier League appearance.
With the summer transfer window closing in and some players nearing the end of their contracts, Hart could see himself looking to find first team football elsewhere and a fresh claim by Football Insider has revealed that the Shrewsbury-born keeper would be pleased to hold talks with Leeds if the Yorkshire club show an interest.
Leeds’ current number one Kiko Casilla has been linked with a summer exit from the club after recently receiving an eight game ban for racially abusing Charlton Athletic loanee Jonathan Leko, as per Football Insider.
Although Hart could be a good replacement for Casilla if the Spaniard leaves Elland Road, he might not get the chance to discuss a possible move with Leeds, with Phillips speaking of Marcelo Bielsa’s relationship with Man City boss Pep Guardiola – whose arrival at City halted Hart’s first team status – and Phillips believes that Bielsa is likely to take the same stance.
“I do not think Bielsa would go for Joe Hart,” he told Football Insider. “I think he will take a similar stance to Pep Guardiola.
“Joe has been a wonderful goalkeeper but Bielsa is looking for someone who has a left foot, right foot and can drill it to the full-backs and the wingers. So I do not expect him to go down that route.”
Guardiola and Bielsa are known to be close friends after the former praised the Argentine coach in the press. With that in mind, and given Hart’s lack of game-time in recent months, it’s not hard to see why Phillips feels he wouldn’t be the right fit for Leeds.
