Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Championship campaign, although the ongoing managerial saga is beginning to concern a few.
The Yorkshire giants parted company with head coach Paul Heckingbottom last week after four months in charge at Elland Road, in which time he led the Whites to just four victories in his 16 games at the helm. And owner Andrea Radrizzani clearly felt that the former Barnsley boss wasn’t the man to take the club forward next term, but who is very much remains to be seen with no appointment as of yet made, although Marcelo Bielsa is the favourite for the role.
And despite the uncertainty surrounding the managerial position, our resident Leeds fans are fully focused on this summer’s transfer window, and as such have been intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Matthew Pennington faces an unclear future at Premier League side Everton.
And having spent this season on loan at the Championship club, Leeds must seek to capitalise on these reports by luring the versatile £450,000-rated defender (as per Transfermarkt) back to Elland Road.
As with any new manager, there are always question marks surrounding the future of many players at the club, and that certainly appears to be the case at Everton following the appointment of Marco Silva as manager, with as many of 12 players reportedly facing the axe this summer.
And given Pennington is 23 now and has only appeared nine times for the Toffees, his future prospects at Goodison Park look very bleak indeed, and as such he may be in search of his next move in a bid to get his career going again.
And having spent a solid spell at Leeds this term, Elland Road could be the ideal destination.
The one-time England Under-19 international appeared 24 times for the Yorkshire giants in their run to 13th place in the Championship this time round, deputising mainly at centre back but also occasionally filling in at right back to underline his versatility.
And while he may not regularly command a spot in the starting eleven ahead of the likes of Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper, he’d certainly be an accomplished alternative for the new manager to choose from, both at centre back and indeed at right back.
Yes, he may have penned a new long-term deal at Everton earlier this summer, but things will obviously change now Silva is in charge at Goodison Park, and it’s difficult to see how he can appear regularly for the Toffees in the top-flight next term – dropping down to the Championship again appears to be his best, and only, choice.
And having performed solidly if unspectacularly at Leeds this term, the Whites should seek to bolster their defensive ranks by luring him back to Elland Road during the close season.
