Leeds are in desperate need of a striker signing in the January transfer window, but Phil Hay has revealed a surprise name that could potentially arrive instead of Che Adams or Andre Gray.
If you’re a Leeds fan who keeps up to date with transfer rumours, you’re probably sick to death of hearing the names Adams and Gray. The Southampton man has been heavily linked all through the January window while the Watford striker has also been touted as a possible addition.
As luck would have it though, Hay, The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent, has revealed another name to get excited about, claiming the Whites ‘have taken a look’ at Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga.
not on the main list. Not wrong to say Leeds have taken a look either.

While Hay does claim that the 27 year-old is not ‘on the main list’, it appears the club do have some interest in Assombalonga, and while he may no get fans buzzing like a swoop for Adams would, he certainly has the proven Championship track record the side is crying out for.
Aforesaid, unlike Adams a swoop for Assombalonga would not bring the excitement of a young player with bags of potential who set the league alight last season. However, the Middlesbrough man does have six goals this season in a side that has struggled for most of the campaign, and his record in previous years suggests he could add just enough firepower to push the Whites to automatic promotion.
Per Whoscored, the DR Congo international has scored either 14 or 15 goals in four of his five seasons in the Championship, and the only campaign he struggled in he made just four substitute appearances due to injury. His total of 65 second-tier strikes is almost double that of Adams’ 34 and also more than Gray’s 42, while his six goals this term are more than both of them combined.
