The arrival of Vydra, who the Whites have been pursuing for weeks, would finally call an end to Leeds’ summer search for a striker.
The 26-year-old looks like he would be a great addition at Elland Road, having enjoyed a sparkling season in the Championship last time out. Marcelo Bielsa will know all about the 21 Championship goals the Czech scored last term, and will be hoping that Vydra serves up more of the same this time around.
However, like all strikers, Vydra relies upon service. Given the way that Leeds’ squad currently looks, that could be the new man’s undoing at Elland Road.
The likes of Mateusz Klich and Eunan O’Kane have struggled to create goalscoring opportunities for Leeds, and a new playmaker is likely to be on Bielsa’s shopping list. Money appears tight at the Yorkshire club though, or at least owner Andrea Radrizzani seems unwilling to spend much of it.
It’s likely that any addition in this area of the pitch will have to be done on the cheap, which is what would make having a gamble on Stephen Ireland worthwhile.
The 31-year-old is a free agent having been released by Stoke following their relegation from the Premier League.
If fit, Ireland has the quality to have an impact at Elland Road and provide the kind of service that Vydra would thrive upon. In recent seasons, injuries have severely depleted the midfielder’s opportunities for first team minutes though.
However, a move to pick up Ireland on a free transfer could prove to be a transfer masterstroke if the ex-Manchester City man can keep himself fit and Bielsa can get him firing again.
